It's known as "The Forgotten War", but all Americans should learn about it and remember it ... and that's where you can help. You have been asked to develop a "Korea 9 3 2 1" webpage to cover the basic information everyone should know about the Korean War - all on one page. Your page should include ...

9 - facts about the causes, events, and impact of the Korean War (look at my examples below)
3 - photos that help tell the story of the war, with descriptive captions
2 - maps that help to explain the war.
1 - quote that is essential to understanding the war, with authors and context

9 - Come up with 9 great facts that everyone should know about "The Forgotten War", using the examples below as guides. I will have my own list that will use to compare to yours - hopefully you will get most of the facts on my list! At least 2 of the facts should be about the CAUSES of the war, at least 3 of the facts should be about the WAR itself, and at least 2 facts should be about the EFFECTS OR IMPACT of the war. The other two can be from any category.
  • A non example ... I like cheese.
  • A bad example ... There was a war in Korea in the 1950s.
  • A good example ... The Korean War began in July of 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea.
  • A better example ... The 3 year long Korean War began in 1950 when communist North Korea invaded democratic and US supported South Korea, pulling the United Nations into a peacekeeping effort in Asia. a

  1. USSR will not allow UN to sponsor the elections in North Korea.
  2. United States and USSR divide Korea after WWII but can't agree on how it should be reunited and governed.
  3. June 29, 1950: General MacArthur, former WWII hero in the Pacific, flies to South Korean headquarters at Suwon.
  4. June 26, 1950-Truman meets at the Blair House, while the White House gets renovated, with high-ranking officials and decides to give aid to South Korea, without declaration of war by Congress.
  5. August 17, 1950: United States announces in the United Nations, its goal of a unified, anti-Communist Korea.
  6. September 15, 1950: The US, UN, and the Republic of Korea forces are pushed back to the near end of the Korean peninsula and MacArthur launched the Inchon Invasion.
  7. The UN became an int'l arbiter and the US questioned its cold war policy and debated on the risk of fighting with communism looming in China and USSR committed.
  8. This led to General MacArthur's dismissal in April of 1951 because of his more digressive and militant approach than what Truman wanted. (Truman feared WWIII.)
  9. Also, it led to the emergence of the Containment policy, in which, the US would get involved should Communism spread.

3 - Photos should help tell the story of the war, so find three photos that work ... and provide a descriptive caption, like the one on my example.

2- What's a war without maps? Insert two maps that help tell the story of the causes, events, and/or impact of the map (with a caption for each)

This map shows the Chinese and UN offensives/the invasion in North Korea and Major Battles.

1 - You know historical quotes can bring old crusty things to like, so find at least one decent quote that helps add to the content of the Korean War (and provide some context for the quotes). For example ...

"The attack upon Korea makes it plain beyond all doubt that Communism has passed beyond the use of subversion to conquer independent nations and will now use armed invasion and war." - President Harry S Truman in his speech describing the military involvement of the US in Korea, without a declaration of war from Congress.

"On the other side of every mountain [was] another mountain."- Lieutenant Colonel George Russell, a battalion commander with the Twenty-third Regiment of the Second Infantry Division, describing conditions in Korea
